Program Description Students in a combined degrees program work on two complimentary university degrees simultaneously. A combined degree is generally a 50-course program during which students complete the requirements for both degrees at the same time. When the student graduates, they will be awarded two bachelor degrees, one for each area of study. The bonus is that you complete a combined degrees program in less time than it would take to complete both degrees individually. Bachelor of Science - Chemistry Chemistry studies the elements that comprise all matter. Everything around us — the air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, cars we drive, even our bodies — are made from these elements. Analytical | Focuses on the detection and measurement of chemical species used in fields like forensics. Organic | Deals with carbon compounds, which are the main components of living matter. Inorganic | Delves into all the remaining elements, most of which are found in the mineral world. Physical | Looks at the study of the fundamental principles governing the behavior of matter. Theoretical | Starts by exploring basic physical theories like quantum mechanics in order to provide frameworks within which all chemical phenomena can be understood The primary focus of the program is to provide you with extensive theoretical knowledge in all five branches, in addition to enhancing your technical and practical skills with hands-on experience. Throughout the program, you will receive intensive laboratory instruction on the transformation and safe handling of chemical compounds, as well as hands-on training in advanced instrumental techniques such as elemental analysis, optical spectroscopy, magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry. As a chemistry student, you will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities that provide the infrastructure to support the research interests of our award-winning faculty, your instructors, as they investigate diverse areas of the chemical sciences including catalysis, nanomaterials and food chemistry. Bachelor of Education - Science Education The Department of Biological Sciences provides you with a great deal of hands-on learning and engaging research, moving you beyond text books and lectures. Chemistry is often called the Central Science as it deals specifically with the 110 elements that comprise all matter. The air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, buildings we live in, cars we drive - our very bodies - are all made from these elements.Chemists pursue the study of matter down to the level of individual atoms, and, in particular, focus on molecules, which are aggregates of elements that act as larger units. Physics is the fundamental science. All other sciences and technologies rely on the principles of physics, by applying them to their systems of interest and/or by using technology based on them. As an Education major a student develops a strong knowledge base in the subject area they intend to teach. They also receive in-depth preparation in how to teach, including both general and subject area instructional methods.
